Lviv International Airport has reported a 46.3% rise in passenger flow in January 2018 compared to the comparative figures for early 2017. Over 85,000 passengers used the airport in the first month of the current year, with 71,000 flying to international destinations. The number of flights also grew considerably year-on-year, rising from 715 flights in January 2017 to 933 flights in January 2018.

These figures are in line with the robust growth statistics posted in 2017, which saw Lviv International Airport boost passenger numbers by 46.3% with 1.8 million passengers flying via Lviv. The western Ukrainian air hub was one of many Ukrainian airports to report dynamic passenger growth in 2017. Kharkiv International Airport saw passenger numbers rise by 34%, while the total nationwide passenger increase for all of Ukraine’s airports was 27.6%, making Ukraine one of Europe’s fast-growing air travel markets.

The advent of visa-free travel to Schengen Zone countries within the EU has helped to boost Ukraine’s air travel industry, while the continuing economic recovery has also boosted domestic demand. A number of new international carriers entered the Ukrainian market in 2017 including Qatar Airways, which launched a daily Kyiv-Doha service in August 2017 before expanding this service to two flights per day within months of the initial launch due to high demand.
