Ukrainian MPs have backed plans to relaunch the country's gambling industry. A total of 248 MPs voted in favor of the new gambling regulations on 14 July, which will allow four- and five-star hotels to host casinos (in Kyiv, the relaxation of restrictions applies to five-star hotels only).
In line with the new legislation, Ukraine's gambling industry will be regulated by the Commission for the Development and Regulation of Gambling. All gambling activities will be restricted to persons over 21 years of age.
The new legalization drive ends an eleven-year ban on the gambling industry. In May 2009, Ukraine outlawed the country's extensive casino and gaming sector virtually overnight. Prior to the ban, gambling establishments had been prominent features throughout the country's towns and cities.
In addition to casinos, the new law also opens the way for a range of gaming enterprises including online gambling and betting shops.
