UKRAINE TURNS WEST: Rail operator to launch new Germany and Slovakia routes in 2019

Ukraine’s national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia has confirmed plans to launch new train services to German capital city Berlin and Kosice in Slovakia during 2019.

The two new routes are part of efforts to boost Ukraine’s rail connections to the rest of Europe after decades of relative rail transport isolation thanks in part to a railway network inherited from the Soviet era that focused almost exclusively on services to other regions within the closed borders of the USSR.

Recently launched trains to Poland and additional EU destinations have proven hugely popular among Ukrainian passengers, with more Ukrainians travelling via rail to Europe in 2018 than to Russia for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, the recently unveiled “Four Capitals” rail service linking Ukraine’s Kyiv with Minsk, Vilnius and Riga is set to extend to Estonia by the middle of the year.
