Figures released in October by the State Statistics Committee show that Ukrainian agricultural output rose year-on-year by just below 5% in the first nine months of 2018. The biggest gains were registered in crop yields, which expanded by 6.9% compared to the corresponding period in 2017. Meanwhile, livestock production was virtually static, declining by 0.1% over the same nine-month period.
This modest overall increase in agricultural output is in line with most current projections for the sector. For example, Ukraine expects to harvest 64 million tons of grain this year, marginally higher than the 61.3 million ton total achieved in 2017 and just short of the 66 million tons achieved in 2016, which represents an all-time high for the Ukrainian agricultural sector.
