As the capital of East Ukraine prepared to host the annual Kharkiv International Economic Forum, the Head of the Kharkiv Region State Administration Yulia Svitlychna introduced USA Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch to one of the most eye-catching new judges appointed by the country as part of efforts to reform the Ukrainian judiciary.

Councilor Oleksandr Mamalui is a prominent public figure thanks to his exploits as a sniper for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian troops continue to face a Russian hybrid army occupying parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. Mr. Mamalui recently qualified for Ukraine’s Economic Court of Cassation, making him one of the most engaging figures to join the country’s court system since the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution.

During their conversation, Ambassador Yovanovitch and Governor Svitlychna also discussed the implementation of Ukrainian and American joint projects as well as the work of the new Regional Center of Administrative Services situated in the Saltovka District of Kharkiv. The meeting was attended by Kharkiv business leader and economic forum sponsor Oleksandr Yaroslavsky.
