Figures released by Ukraine’s State Statistics Service in mid-October highlighted the ongoing decline in unemployment figures, with by far the biggest falls evident in rural communities. An overall total of 287,000 Ukrainians were registered nationwide as being unemployed at the end of September, representing a 24.2% decline on the figure for January 2018.

The difference in the drops between rural and urban Ukraine was particularly striking. During the eight-month period between January and September 2018, the number of registered unemployed decreased by 11% among urban residents and plummeted by 38.6% among rural Ukrainians.
