Kharkiv Olymp Rugby Club won the 2017 Ukrainian Cup in late October, completing a clean sweep of Ukraine’s domestic rugby honors for the 2017 season. The Kharkiv side powered to victory in the Ukrainian Cup Final against Odesa, winning a thrilling encounter 31-27. Oleksandr Yaroslavsky’s rugby club now adds the Ukrainian Cup to the Ukrainian Rugby Sevens Cup and the Sevens and full national championship titles.
This season’s cup final in Odesa was a tense affair, with Kharkiv establishing an early lead thanks to a brace of tries before the hosts managed to restore virtual parity with two tries of their own. At halftime, the difference between the two teams was Kharkiv hooker Oleg Kosarev, whose two sweetly taken penalties gave the east Ukrainians a ten-point cushion. Odesa briefly edged ahead in the second half, only for Kosarev to have the last word with more kicking excellence to secure the cup for Kharkiv.
“It was a difficult match,” acknowledged Olymp head coach Valeriy Kochanov. “We found ourselves competing against a strong team that had prepared well for the match. Despite a number of mistakes, we manage to claim the cup. We are now looking forward to playing a key role for the Ukrainian national team in some crucial upcoming encounters. On 28 October, we face the Swedish national team in the European Championship.”
Kharkiv Olymp is Ukraine’s most decorated rugby club with 13 championships and eight national Sevens titles on it honors list, as well as nine Ukrainian Cup triumphs. The Kharkiv club supplies the core of the Ukrainian national team squad as well as coach Valeriy Kochanov.
